Hands-On Experience Is Crucial to Environmental Protection
Today many organizations have ambitious goals for restoring damaged natural ecosystems and enhancing habitats for threatened species. But few have as much hands-on experience as the natural resources specialists who manage Bufferlands programs, for the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD).
Applied Research Provides Real-World Answers
Our Bufferlands staff have successfully brought applied research to bear on many questions involved in the practical aspects of habitat restoration and management. For example:
- What is the most efficient way for wetlands managers to control mosquitoes?
- Do constructed wetlands harbor more bird species than natural wetlands?
- How can riparian forest managers determine the ages and sizes of a beaver
population?
Since 1992, applied research and adaptive management conducted by our Bufferlands experts has provided practical and useable answers to questions such as these for project sponsors and other resource managers facing similar challenges. Research has also been conducted on diverse issues related to:
- Riparian restoration and regeneration
- Perennial grassland restoration and management
- Weed control
- Wetlands management, and
- The use of constructed wetlands to treat secondary wastewater.
