Creek Week - Birds & Blooms
Saturday, April 19th
1:30 pm to 3:30 pm

The Fishhead Lake mitigation wetland is a nice example of wetlands created as mitigation for earlier wetland losses. The wetland has both a permanent and seasonal component as well as a surrounding upland buffer. Thousands of waterfowl winter at the wetland and many remain year-round to nest and raise young. Much of the area is planted to native wildflowers that bloom in early spring. California poppies, lupines, owl's clover, baby blue-eyes, and many others can bee seen spreading about the uplands and wetland edges. Visitors will receive a packet of native flower seeds to start their own native garden.

The meeting location is weather-dependant, so please contact Roger Jones at (916) 875-9174 or email jonesro@sacsewer.com the week preceding the event for exact meeting location and directions

Creek Week - Local Fish Fauna
Wednesday, April 23rd
12:00 noon - 2:00 pm

What lurks in the murky depths of Sacramento's urban creeks? Join SRCSD Bufferlands staff for an introduction to the local fish fauna. We will demonstrate fish sampling techniques in a local lake, practice hands-on (for those that aren't too squeamish) fish identification, and discuss the natural history of California's diverse fish communities. In addition, we will be able to view one of the direct consumers of the local fish populations as we spy on a large heron and egret rookery. This tour includes a short, 1/2 mile walk and an opportunity to see some of the Bufferlands riparian and wetland habitat restoration projects.

The meeting location is weather-dependant, so please contact Steve Scott at (916) 875-9307 or email scotts@sacsewer.com the week preceding the event for exact meeting location and directions.

Spring Migration at the Bufferlands
Sunday, April 27th
7:00 am - 11:30 am

This morning tour of the Bufferlands will focus on finding migrant songbirds, resident breeding birds, and lingering winter residents of the Sacramento area. The heron, egret and cormorant rookery will be in full swing, and if water levels are right, we could have excellent conditions to see shorebirds. The Bufferlands contain 2,650 acres of wetlands, riparian forest, grasslands, vernal pools, and restored habitats. Be prepared for potentially muddy trails and up to 3 miles of walking.

For directions and more information, call 875-9309 ext. 1, or e-mail Chris Conard at:conardc@sacsewer.com.

Walk on the Wildside - Rookery Tour
Saturday, May 10th
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) Bufferlands and the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge for a Walk on the Wildside, a celebration of International Migratory Bird Day. Walk on the Wildside highlights local efforts to protect and restore Central Valley habitats. This free, family-oriented event includes tours, presentations, live animals, music, hands-on activities, informational exhibits, and more. Guided and self-guided tours are offered throughout the day. Explore a pristine valley oak riparian forest in search of migratory songbirds. Visit numerous wetland and riparian restoration projects. Enjoy a unique opportunity to see one of approximately four heron rookeries in Sacramento County on a Bufferlands guided tour. This rookery contains 67 active nests of great blue herons, great egrets, and double crested cormorants. Spotting scopes will be available for optimum viewing of these fascinating and beautiful birds.

The event is held at Beach Lake Park, near the town of Freeport. Click here for a map or here for more information.

Fall Restoration Tour
Sunday, October 19th
8:30 am - 1:30 pm

Are you interested in Habitat Restoration? If you are a student, volunteer, consultant, professional restorationist, or would just like to learn more about this critical aspect of conservation, we invite you to participate in the Bufferlands Habitat Restoration Workshop.

In 1990, the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) began numerous ongoing habitat restoration projects on its 2,650-acre Bufferlands. Over the years, the natural resource staff has applied and developed many techniques that have led to successful projects. This workshop will draw from over ten years of onsite restoration experience. You will see the restoration sites up-close as we discuss how the projects were implemented, what worked, and how we addressed challenges.

We will walk through a portion of the Upper Beach Lake project and discuss several sites and management strategies. We will focus on field techniques for riparian forest restoration, grassland restoration, and seasonal wetland management. There will be many opportunities to ask questions.

Space is limited, so sign-up in advance. For more information, call 875-9309 ext. 1, or e-mail: conardc@sacsewer.com

Make A Difference Day is a celebration of volunteering to help others and improving your local community. You can do this by volunteering to help plant native trees at the SRCSD Bufferlands. The trees you plant will help improve air quality and provide habitat for area wildlife within the Bufferlands wildlife preserve. So come out and make a difference this year and celebrate Make A Difference Day by planting a tree at the SRCSD Bufferlands.

For more info contact Kevin Cassady at (916) 875-9196 or email cassadyk@sacsewer.com.
