Bufferlands Docents
Lend The Bufferlands a Hand!
Become a Volunteer Docent
Lend the Bufferlands a hand and become a docent and or volunteer. We have many exciting opportunities.
- Do you enjoy seeing 1000’s of ducks lift off the water in unison during winter?
- Would you like to see a beaver dam or perhaps a river otter crunching on a crawfish?
- Do you like working with plants and getting your hands dirty?
- Would you benefit from learning about Central Valley habitats and working with a staff of wildlife biologists and other natural resource professionals?
- Do you enjoy working with school children?
- Do you enjoy leading and assisting with nature tours?
If you said yes to any of the above, you may want to consider becoming a Bufferlands volunteer.
The Bufferlands, a 2,650 acre wildlife area surrounding the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in southern Sacramento County, is currently recruiting volunteers and docents to help with our public outreach program and other operations. If you have some time available and are interested in becoming a docent or volunteer please contact the volunteer coordinator at (916) 875-9309 extension 2. We are always recruiting new volunteers but our docent training occurs once a year and is limited to 12 people. Volunteer Docent training will cover Bufferlands history, local wildlife species and ecology, the various Bufferlands habitats, and the wildlife management principles used by our natural resource management team and more.
If you are interested going through our volunteer docent training program click here. Or if you are interested in learning about other volunteer opportunities on the Bufferlands click here. If you would like to be placed on our mailing list and receive updates for Bufferlands events click here.
Our public events draw over 3000 visitors to the Bufferlands each year. Docents will assist our staff at exhibit booths and help conduct tours of the Bufferlands habitats. Six major events and a number of smaller events are planned for for the coming year...

Docents will also help during various wildlife surveys, including the Annual Christmas Bird Count. This count is part of the RioCosumnes/Stone Lakes count and includes over 50 volunteers throughout the south County area. Several other wildlife and plant surveys are performed on a regular basis.
The Bufferlands is an amazing place, with over 220 bird species and a large number of mammal, fish, and plant species. Much of the Bufferlands is under intensive habitat restoration, including riparian forests, wetlands, and perennial grasslands.
