Pollutants and Sources

What Does the CMP Monitor?

Pollutants:

  • Pesticides and herbicides such as diazinon, chlorpyrifos and RoundupĀ®
  • Bacteria (E.coli, fecal and total coliform)
  • Mercury
  • Metals such as copper, arsenic, lead and aluminum
  • pH, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen

Numerous natural and artificial sources influence water quality. The major factors that affect the water quality in the Sacramento and American rivers include:

  • Natural erosion of land and stream banks
  • Discharges from municipal wastewater treatment facilities, stormwater runoff, along with agriculture, industry, residents and recreational activities
  • Historic mining and timber harvesting
  • River flows that move sediments and associated pollutants down the rivers
  • Wildlife
