Numerous natural and artificial sources influence water quality. The major factors that affect the water quality in the Sacramento and American rivers include:
- Natural erosion of land and stream banks
- Discharges from municipal wastewater treatment facilities, stormwater runoff, along with agriculture, industry, residents and recreational activities
- Historic mining and timber harvesting
- River flows that move sediments and associated pollutants down the rivers
- Wildlife
