Sacramento's Rivers
The Sacramento and American rivers are vital resources of the Sacramento metropolitan area and the State of California. Together, they:
- Supply 75 percent of the freshwater for the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta system
- Provide a home to a vast array of fish and wildlife
- Represent one of the West's most popular recreational venues for boating, fishing, swimming, bird watching and camping
Are of beneficial use to municipal, agricultural and industrial water supplies
River water quality is typically well within state and federal guidelines for these designated uses. Any river waters used as a drinking water supply are required to go through additional treatment regulated by the California State Department of Public Health prior to municipal use.
