Upper Northwest Interceptor Section 9 (UNWI 9) and Associated Northeast Area (NEA) Relief Projects
Overview
NEA-1 Under Construction
Construction continues on the installation of a 36-inch sewer pipe along Oak Avenue from Fair Oaks Boulevard to Hazel Avenue. Only two micro-tunnel drives remain - one in Citrus Heights and the other in Orangevale.
Construction Zone between C-Bar-C Park and Menke Way
Due to the current and pending construction, the traffic control within this stretch of Oak Avenue has been revised to minimize the impacts to the residents and traveling motorists. The traffic control is divided into two sections:
- From C-Bar-C to Olivine Avenue: Current traffic controls will remain in effect until late March 2010 when work in this area should be complete.
- From Olivine Avenue to Menke Way: The contractor is investigating the use of an alternative pipe material to successfully complete this tunneling work. Given that the pipe will take two-to-three months to fabricate, traffic controls within this section will be temporarily removed. Once construction resumes in late spring, traffic controls will be reinstalled and will remain in place until construction is complete in late summer 2010.
Construction at Oak Avenue, East of Hardy Street
Work has stalled temporarily due to a cracked pipe underground, which has halted tunneling efforts. To resolve the issue, a temporary shaft, which will allow crews to fix the pipe and move construction efforts forward, is being constructed at 8657 Oak Avenue. Motorists can expect minor delays near Oak Avenue between Hardy Street and Hickory Avenue to allow for construction equipment to access the area. The work is anticipated to be complete in May 2010.
In other areas along Oak Avenue, the contractor is continuing to backfill shafts, build and test pipe and manholes, and restore the road.
Please remember the speed limit is 25 mph in construction zones - please drive carefully!
The entire project is scheduled to be complete by end of summer 2010!
The complete UNWI line will run west along Old Auburn Road, Auburn Boulevard and Greenback Lane. It then runs along Elkhorn Boulevard in North Highlands, through Rio Linda and finally southbound next to Natomas Boulevard/Truxel Road. There, it ties into the New Natomas Pump Station and the Lower Northwest Interceptor. The project is necessary because the current wastewater system is nearing capacity.
UNWI 9 & NEA-2 Complete!
Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) and Sacramento Area Sewer District are pleased to announce the completion of a major portion of the Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) work. Both UNWI 9 and Associated Northeast Area (NEA) Relief Project 2 along Auburn Boulevard and Old Auburn Road are complete and in service.
