Biosolids Recycling:

During the wastewater treatment process organic matter is removed from the water, treated, disinfected and converted into a fertilizer product called biosolids. This service level is the amount of biosolids that are recycled as a fertilizer instead of wasted.

It is expressed in the following three ways:

---Dry tons produced each calendar year.
---Percent of biosolids at SRWTP that are recycled each calendar year. This will be based on quantities of digested solids.
---Equivalent number of acres that could be fertilized each year. This will be calculated based on a loading rate of 2 dry tons per acre per year. This loading rate corresponds with the nitrogen needs for a typical forage crop and the typical nitrogen content of SRWTP digested biosolids.]

Target

A numeric target has not been formally set at this time. However, the Biosolids Recycling Facility is intended to handle about 25% of the biosolids generated at SRWTP.

Assessment: The Biosolids Recycling Facility began operation in late 2004. In 2006, production levels were increased, due to a need to temporarily reduce the amount of biosolids sent to the dedicated land disposal facilities. In 2007, production was reduced to get back closer to the long term intent of recycling about 25% of its biosolids.

Purpose

This service level represents SRCSD's commitment to environmental stewardship through biosolids recycling.

Critical Activities

The production from the existing Biosolids Recycling Facility (BRF) is linked to the capacity of the equipment, contractual obligation, and some discretion on how much material is delivered from the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant to the BRF. It is expected that this will remain at a relatively constant level for the foreseeable future. Major changes in production levels will be dependent on future planning decisions to expand the BRF or to implement new biosolids recycling projects.
