Here at the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD), we take wastewater pretty seriously.

Photo: SRWTP machinery On an average day, our Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove, California, receives 165 million gallons of wastewater - enough to cover a football field to a height of 40 stories. Think you're not involved with wastewater? Guess again! If you live in Sacramento County, you produce part of that wastewater.

You see, the average American produces about 183 gallons of wastewater every day from toilets, showers, washing machines and many other domestic sources. And that's not counting the millions of gallons of wastewater produced by businesses and industries throughout Sacramento County.

To find out how we make all that water clean and safe enough to return to the Sacramento River, check out this section.
