What You Can Do
The Basics | Reduce Street Flooding | Plant Wildflowers
Protecting California's creeks and rivers is a job that everyone can help with. The people of the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) are proud to share some common-sense suggestions about grassroots environmental action. Here are some easy steps you can take to help protect the waterways we all depend on:
Don't pour household hazardous waste down your sink, toilet or bathtub.
Automotive fluids such as gasoline, motor oil or antifreeze, as well as insecticides, paint, solvents, wood preservatives, lighter fluid and many other common consumer products are considered household hazardous waste.
Never pour household hazardous waste down the storm drain in your street.
Stormwater runoff often flows directly into our creeks and rivers, carrying with it whatever pollutants human beings or natural processes have added. Just one gallon of motor oil can pollute up to two million gallons of water!
Avoid using excessive amounts of household chemicals.
If you choose to use pesticides or fertilizers, follow the directions carefully. Don't use more than you really need.
If you spill a large quantity of motor oil in your driveway, dont hose it into the storm drains.
Instead, sprinkle clay kitty litter or other absorbent material to soak up the oil. Dispose of the oil-soaked material during a household hazardous waste collection event (read on).
Properly dispose of leftover hazardous waste (HHW) at one of two locations in Sacramento:
